Substance Abuse & Addiction

Understanding the Signs

Substance abuse and addiction can affect anyone—regardless of age, background, or life situation. Whether it involves alcohol, prescription medications, or other substances, these challenges often develop gradually and can begin to interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.

Below are examples of common signs and situations that may indicate someone is struggling.

Examples of Substance Abuse & Addiction

  • Using alcohol or drugs to cope with stress, emotions, or daily challenges

  • Drinking or using more than intended, or using more frequently than before

  • Needing higher amounts of a substance to feel the same effect (tolerance)

  • Difficulty cutting back or stopping, even after trying

  • Spending a lot of time obtaining, using, or recovering from substances

  • Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home

  • Changes in mood, sleep patterns, or energy levels

  • Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities once enjoyed

  • Using substances in risky situations (e.g., driving)

  • Continued use despite negative consequences to health or relationships

When to Seek Help

It may be time to reach out for support if you or someone you care about is experiencing:

  • A feeling of losing control over drinking or substance use

  • Cravings or a strong urge to use

  • Impact on relationships, work, or school performance

  • Health concerns related to substance use

  • Worry or concern from family, friends, or coworkers

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or secrecy about use

  • Failed attempts to cut down or stop

  • Emotional difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, or irritability connected to substance use.

Seeking help is a courageous and important step—not a sign of failure. Early support can prevent problems from getting worse and make recovery more achievable.
