What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly researched, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, distressing experiences, and emotional wounds that feel “stuck.” Instead of relying only on talk therapy, EMDR helps the brain reprocess difficult memories so they no longer trigger the same emotional intensity.

How EMDR Works

EMDR uses a structured approach that includes:

  • Identifying distressing memories or current triggers

  • Noticing thoughts, feelings, and body sensations connected to those experiences

  • Bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to help the brain reprocess the memory.

Through this process, memories that once felt overwhelming become less emotionally charged, allowing you to move forward with greater clarity and calm.

What EMDR Can Help With

EMDR can be effective for:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Childhood or relational trauma

  • Phobias

  • Stress and overwhelm

  • Self-esteem issues

Why Clients Choose EMDR

Clients often choose EMDR because it:

  • Works without requiring detailed retelling of painful events

  • Can create meaningful change in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy (for many people)

  • Helps release emotional experiences stored in the body

  • Supports long-term healing, not just symptom management.

What to Expect in an EMDR Session

During an EMDR session at Anwari Counseling, you can expect:

  1. A safe and supportive environment focused on your comfort

  2. Guidance in identifying the memory or issue you want to work on

  3. Gentle bilateral stimulation to help your brain process the memory

  4. A gradual shift toward more adaptive, empowering thoughts and feelings

You are always in control of the pace. We move only when you feel ready.
